Ribomed Biotechnologies, Inc. was founded by Dr. Michelle Hanna in 1999. Focused on the development of rapid, specific, and robust tests for early disease detection, Ribomed was selected as a finalist for the World's Best Technologies 2005 Award from the National Association of Seed and Venture Funds and the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer. In May 2005, Ribomed received the prestigious 2005 Frost & Sullivan Excellence in Research of the Year Award. Ribomed has recently moved to a 30,000 square foot downtown Phoenix research facility. Says Dr. Hanna, "The level of openness and collaboration among the universities, the research foundations, the communities, and the businesses in Arizona is extraordinary. Our company benefits from this environment in all aspects' from research and development to marketing and management." Ribomed's next step will be to lease about half of their current facility to emerging biotech companies. Look out for upcoming news about P-Bio, the Phoenix Biotech Accelerator!
Acenta Discovery Inc. moved their company from Washington, DC to Tucson in fall of 2003. The nine-person biotech firm is located at the University of Arizona Science and Technology Park. Acenta Discovery's President, Hans F. Roth, is enthusiastic about the future of the bioscience industry in Arizona. "Arizona's government, business and education sectors have determined that the biosciences are critical for both improving our citizen's lives and our state's future economic development." As a result, Acenta has joined forces with the University of Arizona in a unique partnership to provide resources and encouragement for creation of successful bioscience organizations. Says President Roth, "When it came time to build our new Science Center, after looking at all of the usual locations we decided that Arizona was the place to be." Acenta's research focuses on cancer and neurosciences, especially Alzheimer's disease and pain.
The Molecular Profiling Institute (MPI), TGen spin-off company, provides cutting-edge testing facilities, products, and resources for genomic and proteomic profiling and treatment of cancers. Molecular Profiling is led by scientific visionaries, clinical oncologists, and drug developers with a proven track record of building successful companies, revolutionizing medicine, and treating patients. Since cancer is a unique disease caused by the uncontrolled proliferation of cells through a variety of molecular pathways and the underlying cause of each patient's cancer may be different, one patient may respond to a specific therapy while another does not. Molecular Profiling helps the physician determine the molecular nature of each patient's cancer so that they may better tailor a therapy for that individual. This approach to treatment is known as "personalized medicine." Molecular Profiling's analysis is integrated with standard methods of cancer treatment to provide physicians with a comprehensive description of their patients' tumors. This allows a large number of patients to have their cancers more accurately classified for origin or type, severity, prognosis, response to therapy and, most importantly, effective treatment targets.
